Emanuel Cleaver has a Ph.D. in African, African American and African Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. He was a professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of California-Davis until his retirement in 2001. His research interests include popular culture, U.S
culture between 1940 and 1950, post-structuralism, and modernism. In addition to writing more than twenty books on American literature, he is the co-editor of three volumes of critical essays on Paul Goodman's work: The One-Way Street: Essays on Paul Goodman (1993), New Shadows: Essays on Paul Goodman (2002), and Great American Writers: The Legacy of Paul Goodman (2003).
